Dan never wants to spend a lot of money on one particular item. This is good and bad. Good, because a bit of frugalness isn’t a bad thing. But bad, because some things you should spend the money on.

Which brings me to earlier today.

Dan needs glasses, desperately. He has been putting them off for months. I made him promise that when we got our tax return, we would go and get glasses for him. He said okay. So yesterday, we go to JC Penneys, where they have a $99 sale – get a pair of frames (any as long as they’re under $130) and single line plastic lenses for $100. Okay, decent deal…but. The frames they had for $130 and under sucked. So he found a really sweet pair of totally rimless frames. $199. So there was an additional $70 we would have to kick out. He grumbles, but agrees. I point out that he’s going to be wearing these glasses all the time… he should have something he likes.

Then we get to the lenses. For thin, scratch resistant and anti-glare lenses we were looking at another $120. He grumbles, but I remind him again that these glasses are an investment. He’ll be wearing them during all waking moments of every single day, for at least the next two to three years (or when his prescription changes; whichever comes first), so he might as well get really good lenses to go along with them. The anti-glare is especially handy, seeing as he does a lot of night driving.

Then finally, a one year warranty for $15.

So there you have it – even with a sale, $300 for glasses. He’s griping, but I know deep down he’s happy and excited to get a really nice pair of glasses, finally.
