We send each other text messages, instant messages and e-mails. A lot of the time we do this when we’re in the same room together.
It reminds me of the beginning of our relationship. I had known Dan from work for about three weeks when I really started getting interested in him. We were “official” for a week before he went away to college. Our relationship was long distance a good part of the time from August 2000 until April 2002. I saw him at Thanksgiving, Christmas, spring break (first week in March), and then for his summer break (mid April to late August). During our second year together (2001), I went to see him in September, October, February and late March.
I have a lot of fond memories of those exciting trips to Pittsburgh… waiting anxiously and nervously for the train to finally arrive so I could get off and run straight to him. Then we would ride the public buses back to his apartment and have wild sex before settling down for a nice, sweet, fun filled visit.
But as exciting and fun as those visits were, they weren’t worth the pain of being apart so often. The goodbyes were awful. I am so thankful that those days are behind us. Believe me when I say that even now, five years after our relationship ceased to be long distance, I never ever take it for granted that he is within arm’s reach every single day.
