How much do you know about acne and why Proactiv (yes, Proactive; the stuff Jessica Simpson has been recommending for years!) can successfully treat it?
While there are various forms of acne, all forms start out the same way: a hair follicle becomes enlarged, filled with oil and bacteria. This enlarged, plugged follicl eis called a comedo. With acne, the comedo becomes filled with more bacteria as the skin produces more oil. The surrounding skin becomes red and inflamed as your body’s white cells rush to fight against the intruder – the comedo.
Please note that acne is not caused by what you eat, or what you do, or even stress. Acne is the result of pimples gone bad – real bad.
acne.com has brief descriptions of the types of acne – non-inflammatory acne, such as whitehead acne – where comedos stay beneath the surface, or blackhead, where comedos erupt through the skin and are dark in appearance due to a buildup of melanin.
Then there is inflmmatory acne, including papule, pestule, nodule or cyst and acne conglobata. These consist of comedos that become inflamed, swollen, red, and very tender or even painful to the touch.
Treatments include benzoyl peroxide, which works by destroying the bacteria that causes acne in the first place. However, this is not a preventative, only a treatment for existing acne. You can find this product in the form of gel, cream, lotion and various cleansers in both non-prescription and prescription form.
Then there is Proactiv. Check out brief info of it on the treatments page. Try out the three step treatment and prevention program and save $20!
