My first love, now my ex, was a guy I met online in mid 1999. I met him through other online friends of mine, who introduced me to a chatroom they frequented due to the other members being local. We clicked immediately, meeting in the chatroom and then on ICQ daily for several weeks. It is possible to fall in love with somebody online, because I fell in love with him – Theo. We got “together” on September 16th, 1999. We talked all of the time, wrote one another letters, called each other (the phone bills were atrocious but well worth it). I even participated in special surveys online to get ten minute phone cards to use during my school lunch. I would wolf down my food, then rush out to the pay phone to call Theo.
We met in person in January of 2000, when Theo took a bus from Canada (he was there for a few weeks to visit his cousin) to stay with me for a weekend. I still remember that day like it was yesterday… the excitement, the anxiety, the apprehension… but most of all, the overwhelming excitement!
We broke up several months later (I did the breaking up), but it had very little to do with the fact that our relationship was internet based.
Why am I telling you all of this? Because I want to stress that while my internet relationship didn’t work out, many do. In fact, I recently got in touch with Theo and found that he is now with a woman who lives in the same state as I do. He met her online, came to see her, and the rest was history.
