Have I mentioned how much I despise fleas? Especially because the worst flea cases I’ve had seem to have involved my Persian cats. It’s almost as if the instinct to bite and scratch at something that is crawling and nibbling on you was bred out of them.
Ugh.
I’ve done it all when it comes to flea prevention and treatment, and I feel like the queen of it all! First, treat the cats – bathe the cats with dish soap, or a mild shampoo that also kills fleas (I recommend the Zodiac line of products). After the bath, use a flea comb to go over the fur to make sure all of the fleas – alive, dying and dead – are out. Then, isolate the cats from the house. See, you MUST treat the house along with the cats!
Treating the house – I recommend going around and spraying down all of the furniture with flea killing spray. Then turn off all unneeded electrical appliances, close windows and doors, turn off the pilot light to your stove and/or furnace, and set off flea bombs. Vacate the premises for at least six hours. Come back and open up doors and windows and air the place out for an hour before bringing the cats back in.
Prevention – one tablespoon of brewer’s yeast per serving of canned cat food, three times a week. Zodiac flea collars, but watch for signs of sensitivity and irritation! Keep cats indoors. Check their fur frequently. At the first sign of fleas, IMMEDIATELY treat.
And lastly, check out fleascontrol.com for other flea prevention and treatment ideas. I’ve named a few, but there are many, many more!
