Gretchen Ritters looks upon stay at home mothers as a plague in society. Among other things, she feels that when women choose to be stay at home mothers…
- That choice by women denies fathers the chance to be involved;
- Women lose a chance to contribute as professionals and community activists;
- It teaches children the world is divided by gender;
- It stresses children out;
- It victimizes women who work because employers fear women professionals may opt for the same choice some day and quit their jobs;
- It makes it tougher for families with two working parents because schools and libraries will neglect their needs
Let’s tackle these one by one, shall we?
That choice by women denies fathers the chance to be involved.
Funny. With me being home all of the time and keeping things running smoothly here, my husband is able to come home and enjoy quality, relaxing time with his children. Furthermore, we are both much happier, now that we no longer juggle two full time jobs and parenting.
Women lose a chance to contribute as professionals and community activists
How so? I know of many women who work from home, both in professional environments and more casual, freelance/part time environments. I happen to fall into the latter category. Women who stay at home usually have a firm grasp on the running of the household and care of the children, and without the stress and time consumption that comes along with jobs, work schedules and daycares in the way, they are free to participate in many different causes and events. Again, I am one of them. I have attended different conferences, “peaceful” protests and demonstrations that a job would have prevented me from going to.
It teaches children the world is divided by gender
I fail to see how, considering that there are many stay-at-home dads. Also, there are many work at home moms. I don’t think it really matters which parent chooses to stay at home, so long as they and their spouse are happy with the decision. If anything, stay at home moms teach children that the world is divided by responsibility. In the case of a two parent household where one parent is a stay-at-home parent and the other works outside the home, it shows children that there can be a balance between the two.
It stresses children out
I can’t even think of a response to this. It is that off the wall.
It victimizes women who work because employers fear women professionals may opt for the same choice some day and quit their jobs
There will always be employers who worry and think about the “what if’s”. To cast blame on stay at home moms for the insecurities of employers is ludicrous.
It makes it tougher for families with two working parents because schools and libraries will neglect their needs
Considering that these days most households consist of two working parents, I seriously doubt that.
Attention all self-labeled feminists: I have a question to pose to you. Why are you so gung-ho for our gender, except when we decide, of our own volition, to stay at home? Isn’t that what feminism is all about? Being EQUAL and making CHOICES without interference from others? Any woman who chooses to berate, intimidate or dare to interfere with another woman’s choice is clearly not a feminist. At least, not in the true sense of the word.
In a nutshell, Gretchen Ritters is fucking insane.
