As I mentioned at jenn.nu, I got my period today. While bemoaning my status as a woman and dealing with this rather unpleasant and quite painful ordeal each month to my husband, I got to thinking about when I first got my period (by the way, that was eleven years ago – Jesus, when did I get so old?).
When I first got my period, I dealt with rather unpleasant cramps. I remember waking up from the intensity of them early in the morning, being half asleep and curled into a fetal position, whimpering and rocking back and forth in the hopes of the cramps going away. Sometimes curling tightly into a ball on my knees and applying a lot of pressure to my abdomen would alleviate some of the pain and tightness. Other times stretching flat out on my stomach would work.
After I was on hormonal birth control for about a year and a half, my periods were inconsistent, but still just as painful.
After I had Alyssa, my periods were more inconsistent than ever, but I attribute that to a combination of breastfeeding and family and work related stress. During this time my periods weren’t quite as painful.
After I had Ryan, my periods became regular as clockwork, despite breastfeeding exclusively. With Alyssa, my period returned around seven weeks postpartum. With Ryan, my period returned around six weeks postpartum.
One thing that has always remained consistent with my periods is the flow. Can we say heavy? Extremely heavy.
And as of late, the pain. Oh, the pain. Speaking of which, I feel it starting to rear its ugly head again. Oy.
