Not everyone needs a piece of paper to show the world that they're committed. I know a couple who have three children together and their fourth is the mother's child from a previous marriage, the parents each make six figures annually, they've been together for over 10 years and they have no desire to ever "make a clean break". They've both had failed marriages and don't see the need to go through the official process just to get a piece of paper. Just because they don't conform to society's view of what a "real" family is doesn't mean they're trying to screw the government over or avoid divorce lawyer fees.
