While browsing CNN’s Living section today, I came upon a good article that spells out simple ways to save water, without making more than a few minor adjustments to your home and daily routines.
Turn off the water while brushing your teeth.
Raise your hand if you’re guilty of leaving the water running while you’re brushing for those two to three minutes. I admit it, I have been guilty of this. But for the past six months, I have been making the effort to remind myself to turn off the water. And you should turn off yours, too. By turning off the water while brushing your teeth, you’ll save almost 3000 gallons of water per year.
Bring your own water with you.
Those $1.19 bottles of water found in convenience stores, grocery stores, retail stores and even soda machines are convenient and handy, but come at a hefty price: close to seven liters of water is used to make just one liter of bottled water. So buy your own reusable water bottle, and fill up at home before heading out. By supplying your own water, you’ll save almost 600 gallons of water per year.
Water your lawn early in the morning, or after the sun goes down.
The sun is at its brightest and the heat at its highest during the daytime, which translates into quicker evaporation. You could be depriving your lawn, plants and trees of 14% of water or more. Water when the sun isn’t high in the sky, and save about 4,500 gallons of water per year.
