You should read Escape

It took me from Sunday night to Monday night to buzz through Carolyn Jessop’s Escape. Escape was a really, really good book. It was basically an autobiography that detailed Carolyn’s life as a member of the Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, and ended with her escape from that abusive and degrading life, along with her eight children.

I had a hard time locating a copy of this book in stores, and I am presuming that is because of what is going on right now with the Texas YFZ compound raid of over four hundred children.

I’d definitely recommend this book to anyone who has an interest in learning more about the life as an FLDS member, and just how horrible that life really is, particularly for women. The more I read about the FLDS and its members and think about it, the more I see all those crazy rules of the religion as nothing more than ways to guarantee men everything they could want in life, and then some: a surplus of wives to have sex and keep his home neat and orderly as he sees fit, and plenty of offspring to prove his manliness with the existence of.

It’s sickening. :(
