My new electronic baby, that is:
That is the Nikon SB-600 Speedlight. It can function wirelessly and free of the camera itself, but that wasn’t why I bought it. I opted for it over the SB-400, because despite being nearly $100 more, it has a lot more to offer. The SB-400 offers a flash that can be angled four different ways, to create the bouncing flash effect. The SB-600 does that, but it also features a “head” that can be swiveled. So you can have a flash going off at a 45 degree angle that is aimed sideways, facing away from your subject. Also, the SB-600 works in conjunction with the settings of compatible cameras (my Nikon D40x is one of them), and so its flash speed and brightness is adjusted accordingly. And finally, the flash has settings and a menu on the back, so flash compensation and the like can be configured from the flash itself!
I’m in love. Now I just need to get better at taking photos with it.
