Music is very powerful. It’s amazing how with one song, you can be instantly transported back to a particular time, a particular place, a particular event, even a particular smell. The rush of emotions that comes along with that mental transport can be incredible, overwhelming even. I was sitting here tonight listening to some music when a particular song came up on my playlist. I was immediately swept back to a particular time of my life… hence this entry, and the question I pose to you (feel free to answer here, or in your own blog!):
What songs instantly take you to a previous time, another place or a particular situation?
Some of mine…
Avril Lavigne – I’m With You
Winter of 2003. Working at a mall kiosk in Pittsburgh, leaving work at night, raining, waiting for Dan to come and pick me up.
Enya – Orinoco Flow
Seventh grade, Philadelphia. AC unit running in my bedroom, Pure Moods playing on my spiffy boom box as I went to sleep, dreaming about my latest crush (in this case, one of the teachers, Mr. Leaness. He was HOT!)
Gnarls Barkley – Crazy
Driving to the hospital with Dan to be admitted for the c-section I would have in order to bring Ryan into the world. This song came on right as we parked. I still remember the exact spot we pulled into.
LFO – I Will Show You Mine
Ninth grade, in my room doing homework after school.
Missy Elliott – Work It
Driving to my housekeeping job in Pittsburgh.
Nelly – County Grammar
2000. Going bowling with Dan, his brother and his brother’s latest 15 year old girlfriend at the time.
Nonpoint – In the Air Tonight
Driving to and from the hospital to visit my grandmother before she died. Finally, going to the funeral.
Savage Garden – You Can Still Be Free
Tenth grade, riding on the school bus, thinking about my boyfriend of the time, Theo.
Seether – Broken
Early, painful labor with Alyssa. Scared to death.
