I can’t tell you how many times I hear a song on the radio, decide I like it, but have no idea who does the song or what the song’s title is. Worse yet are the times where I remember only bits and pieces of a song. It can take a LONG time to find a song if you don’t know much about it! A classic example is Phoenix’s “Run, Run, Run”. I heard it in May of 2005, but didn’t figure it out until almost two months later.
Last week I heard Tantric’s “Down and Out”, but couldn’t remember any of it to tell Dan about. I just so happened to browse through a “recently played” list on a local radio station’s website and stumbled across it (yay!).
So, I think it’s pretty neat that there’s a relatively convenient way to figure out what song you’re listening to, and even be provided with a direct download link to the iTunes store for it. The concept is called iTunes Tagging, and it requires that you have a specific HD receiver/dock and an iPod hooked up to it. The receiver works like a regular radio, though it obviously broadcasts in HD.
How does it work? Easy. Using the high definition radio, you listen to music like you normally would (just make sure that your iPod is attached!). If you hear a song you like, press the “TAG” button located on the receiver. The song’s information is added to a separate playlist on your iPod, and the next time you connect your iPod to your computer, iTunes will display the new playlist with the song info!
