Well, just one for now. She’s a hermit crab, and her name is Cindy. Although don’t take my word for her gender, because I really have no clue. Our friend Jason brought back goodies from the beach, including a hermit crab for Alyssa, who promptly named her Cindy and insisted she was a girl. Alrighty then!
So between comments on Flickr, tweets on Twitter and general information on the internet, I have found that hermit crabs require a little more care than originally thought. Oops. We need to get a better cage (read: glass or plastic tank with a lid), under tank heater if house temps are below 70-72 (which they are; we keep it around 68), 70% humidity, some extra food, climbing toys, and most importantly… FRIENDS. Despite their names, hermit crabs are actually very social creatures! Dan is really on board with the hermit crab thing, and almost more excited about them than I am. He’s insisting we get Cindy not one but two friends, lol.
We’ll be getting the hermit crab stuff and two more crabs either tonight or tomorrow. I’ll post back with pictures of our new pets then.

That is so cute! I love hermit crabs. They used to be all over the place where I used to live (St. Thomas). They used to just crawl into our house.
If you find the under tank heater thing…let me know where you got it. My boyfriends 6 year old daughter has 2 hermit crabs and I have been looking everywhere for one! Hermit crabs are great little pets for little kids, we keep ours in my b/f’s daughters room and she takes care of them all her own.
