Happy (belated) Fourth of July everyone! What did you do for your holiday? Dan and I threw a party. We’ve done little informal barbecues in the past, but just for ourselves, my mom and my brothers. This year we did it for ourselves, my mom, my brothers (only one was able to come), and Dan’s brother and girlfriend, our friend Jason, and Danielle and Matt. And since my fourteen year old brother just turned fourteen on Wednesday, we celebrated his birthday as well, by having a cake and giving him presents.
Note to self: don’t buy as much food last time! Since we were having eleven people total, we wanted to have enough food for everyone. So we bought two packs of hot dogs (plus we had a pack of cheese-filled hot dogs), and 5 lbs. of ground beef, half of which went to the making of eighteen burgers. I also put together two pasta salads from boxed mixes (the bacon & ranch is seriously SO DAMN GOOD), and we shucked and boiled two dozen corn on the cob. And between the chips I had, the chips my mom brought and the chips Danielle and Matt brought, we had like eight bags of chips. I also baked cookies, and there was the birthday cake.
Leftovers, after sending two burgers, two hot dogs, two bags of chips and cookies with my brother, include about ten hot dogs, four burgers, all but four ears of corn, half of the cake, and almost all of the chips. Ahh! What am I going to do with all this food? I seriously don’t want to be eating hamburgers, hot dogs, corn on the cob and pasta salad for the next three nights in a row. Maybe I’ll vacuum seal some of it?
Anyway, tonight was a lot of fun. The kids had a great time, especially when Dan took them outside to catch fireflies. My brother really loved his presents, particularly the Zune my mom got for him (she got it + a 3g iPhone + about $200 worth of accessories off of eBay for $320!). I got him a large stuffed iDog that can play iPod or Zune music through its speakers, and Alyssa picked out a cute little card game for him.
My brother is doing really well. His acne is clearing up, thank goodness, and he is doing much better with personal hygiene. I still can’t believe that he is fourteen… my baby brother is definitely growing up!
