I manage the budget for a family of four. In addition to myself, my husband, our almost five year old daughter and almost three year old son, there are four cats (soon to be five, though the fifth is hopefully temporary!), one dog, three hermit crabs and two water frogs. In short, there are a LOT of mouths to feed and a lot of products to be constantly thinking about and purchasing.
Obviously, the needs come first: food, personal products, household supplies, pet food. Then there are the other essentials and goodies, like air fresheners, cat toys, dog treats, and so on.
Finally, there are the fun things — toys and books for the kids, toys (video games and the like) for the husband, and clothes for me! Even though I spend the most money each month on groceries and household supplies, I am typically able to save the largest percent of money on clothes for myself. When I shop at Fashion Bug or Lane Bryant, for example, I am often able to use coupons that save me anywhere from 10% to 30%. My last shopping expedition at Target resulted in the purchase of $218 worth of clothes for just $106. Of course, combining coupons with an in-store sale of 40% off certain items definitely helped.
But the point is, I’m able to save the most on clothing, especially when I use coupons! So before I set food in Fashion Bug, I stockpile Fashion Bug coupons. Ditto for Torrid coupons for Torrid, Old Navy coupons for Old Navy, and so on and so forth.
