Having worked for a cell phone company, I can already tell her that if she lives in an area with a lot of trees, it will not matter if she is using an iPhone, Blackberry, or Android, she will not get good internet service on her phone. I used to get calls from people all the time who said they lived in an area surrounded by trees but as soon as they got out of there, they'd get internet service on their phone again.

I agree, your mother should just get a basic phone and be done with it.

lol I'm still hoping the iPhone moves to another network. I'm on Sprint and so far nobody's beat their price for us (that and they've got darn good coverage even in the boonies). It's a pity some people just get it to get it and then don't really know how to make optimal use of it. It's just like any other smart phone, not everyone NEEDS one.
