I am turning 29 in two weeks and two days. And while it may seem like I have a lot of life experiences under my belt for a soon-to-be-29-year-old — including a marriage of 8.5 years, an overall relationship of almost 13 years, two children, substantial weight loss, six surgeries, and enough family drama to last for a lifetime — on the flip side, being almost 29 and having all these “accomplishments” results in making me feel much older than my “mere” 28-going-on-29-year-old-self.

They say that you’re only as old as you feel. If that’s the case for me, then I may be turning 29, but I feel like I’m turning 40. On the bright side, I suppose, is the fact that when I do turn 40, I’ll hopefully be able to relax and just enjoy life at a slower pace.

When it’s nearing my bedtime (these days that’s anywhere between 10pm and midnight), or I want to take a nap in order to be rested up enough to tackle the rest of the day), I like being drowsy. Nights when it’s especially cool — perfect for cuddling up to the husband in a bed of flannel sheets and thick comforters — or it’s raining heavily are the best for drowsiness and a good night’s sleep.

But when it’s dreary, or early and I have a lot to do, I don’t like being drowsy. Unfortunately, today’s weather – rainy, a little cool – is perfect for inducing drowsiness. But since I had a good night’s sleep last night, I’ve managed to stay awake so far today. I watched the last couple of episodes of season 1 of Grey’s Anatomy, and now I’m tackling blog stuff. I feel a teensy bit drowsy at the moment, but in a couple of minutes I’ll be taking a walk down to the bus stop to meet the kids with umbrellas (Dan is at work and my car’s starter died, so I’m currently car-less), so that should take care of that.

As far as our Memorial Day weekend goes, it was mostly kid-oriented: playdate, a sleepover, and a trip to the park on Sunday. Aside from being plagued by allergies on Sunday (laying in the grass when you forgot to take a Claritin prior to leaving the house wasn’t exactly a smart idea) afternoon, the park trip was nice – the kids had fun, and us adults (Jason came along) enjoyed ourselves.

Mom is by biggest ally but the older I get the harder and harder it is for us to get along. I love her SO much but she’s just really overbearing and as I’m turning into a full-fledged adult I really want to push back and tell her she’s going to have to chill out. I bought a house last year and it made me feel like I was truly independent. I had a mortgage in my name, I owned a couch and I even had a matching set of dishes! She was great about it at first and even helped me paint the place but now she’s all over me all the time asking if I’ve sent in my mortgage payment for the month or if I’ve gone to that ElectricCompaniesTexas.net link she sent me to look into electricity rates. I really appreciate all her help and I know it comes from a good place but sometimes I feel like mom still thinks I’m 15. I mean, she really thinks she needs to ask me if I’ve paid my mortgage? I love being the baby of the family sometimes because it means I got more leeway growing up but now that I AM an adult I think mom thinks I’m somehow less capable than my brothers. I think it’s partly because I’m a girl, too, but that’s a story for another day. I’m trying to figure out how to say something to her without it totally crushing her but mom’s really sensitive and the last thing I want is for her to feel like I don’t totally love her and all her help. On top of that, some of the help is really, well, helpful! I don’t want that to stop just because I want her to cut back on all the unnecessary stuff, you know? It’s a rock and a hard place and I’m trying to navigate the best way to deal with it.

My husband has a couple of pairs of sexy undies that I can’t call anything other than banana hammocks… I guess they’re technically bikinis? In any case, I find bikinis and boxer-briefs to be the hottest.

2. What’s your fussiest personal care routine?
Eyebrow tweezing.

3. Do you have a favorite tool? Power or manual?
My pink butterfly-adorned Sally Hansen tweezers.

4. Can you change your own oil? Do you?
In theory I can. In practice I never have.

5. What’s the “manliest / ‘womenliest” thing you do on a regular basis?
Womenliest: putting on makeup every single day.

6. What’s something “manly” that you never learned how to do?
Operate power tools.

7. Do you ever cry? If so, what’s your trigger?
I cry when I’m anxious, stress, scared, and even angry. It’s most annoying when I cry out of anger, because I’d rather come across as ragey than teary.

8. Do you have a chivalrous streak? How does it manifest itself?
I’m polite and courteous: I say please and thank you, hold doors, yield to other drivers, etc.

9. Do you have a chauvinistic streak? How does it manifest itself?
I don’t think so.

10. What’s your favorite movie?
Con Air… a surprisingly testosterone-fueled choice for a woman, eh?

11. What’s the dumbest, testosterone-inspired thing you’ve ever seen?
Men being stupid with each other: penis-waving contests and the like.

12. What quality do you think makes a good man good? Do you have that quality?
I’m not a man, but a good quality for a man is respect for all types of people, regardless of gender, skin color, sexual preference, religion, etc.

13. Toilet seat up or down?
Down, dammit.

14. If your significant other is away, do you cook for yourself or eat out of cans and boxes (or rely on local drive-throughs and delivery)?
It depends on how lazy I’m feeling. Usually I will go ahead and cook, since I have two kids to feed, too.

15. What societal expectation of being a man / women do you most resent?
I resent being expected to take a bunch of crap from men: wolf-whistles and cat-calls and obscene gestures are not okay.

16. What’s the best part – societal-wise – about being a man / women?
The best part of being a woman is getting to play with makeup and glitter! Whoo!

17. Will you stop to ask for directions?
Yup! Though I usually try to use my GPS or my phone, first.

18. What’s one thing about your significant other that you just cannot understand, no matter how hard you try?
The penis-waving stuff.

19. What do you need to have in the shower?
Facial cleanser, body wash, shampoo, conditioner, razor, pouf. I think that about covers it.

20. Do you burp/fart/scratch? Do you do anything stereotypically male?
