One of my 2010 goals, one I didn’t really publicize because at the time I didn’t think of it, was to put forth more effort with dinner. It’s not that I didn’t cook before, I did; but I didn’t really make a lot of homemade things on a regular basis. I relied too much on pre-made foods, or quick meals that required me cooking only one dish, and just boiling up or microwaving the rest. This year I have been kicking butt at not only buying loads of meats (and vacuum-sealing them with my trusty sealer!), potatoes, rice, vegetables, and other things (and tons of pantry essentials like sauces, cream soups, broths, seasonings, etc.), but I’ve been USING them. I’ve been making slow-cooker meals, casseroles, stir-fried meals, etc.

I’m rather proud of my most recent homemade dinner, which we enjoyed last night:

The recipe made eight 10 oz. custard dishes worth of the beef stew in a bread bowl (the “bread” being a flattened Pillsbury flaky biscuit, lol). I served up four for dinner, though Dan had to help me eat mine, and then I vacuum-sealed the remaining four. That’s the other thing — we have been doing SO much better at using up leftovers. And I have been cutting back on the portions I make for meals, so a lot of the time we have very little leftovers, if we even have any at all!

Go me and my domesticatedness!

You’re looking at Rice Krispie treats that got a makeover for Valentine’s Day. I simply added some pink food coloring to the melted marshmallow and butter mixture (I added a little too much, I think. These babies are seriously PINK!), mixed in some sprinkles (that you can’t see, unfortunately), and then used cookie cutters to make heart-shaped treats once the mixture had cooled and hardened a bit.

I want to make some more later on, only I’m going to use red food coloring instead of pink. I’m also going to try mixing in the sprinkles with the marshmallows and Rice Krispies, instead of mixing them in with just the marshmallow.

When my brothers were toddlers they couldn’t pronounce strawberries. Instead they said smallberries. Too cute. They’re both teens now (well, my youngest is 12, but he’ll be 13 this December, so that’s close enough!), but I still remember that. I still remember my fourteen year old brother saying qweewee instead of sweetie. So one of his nicknames — Qwee — came from that. I slipped and called him that in front of the secretary at his boarding school yesterday, and she was like, “What did you just call him?” and asked for the story behind the name. Heh.

Then after that we walked outside and laughed at the ridiculous looking lambo doors on an expensive car. How unpractical. How would you use those in a garage? Seriously?

Anyway, I thought of my brothers when I looked through my Flickr photostream and saw the photos of strawberries I took last week. God I can’t believe that they used to be so little! It seems like eons ago that my mom was having a baby shower and getting personalized baby gifts. Now they’re hulking teenagers, one of them being taller than me!

The picture:

Mmm, strawberries. What’s funny is that I don’t eat them because I don’t like the texture of them. But if they’re blended up into a fruit smoothie? I’m all for it. If not, then I’ll pass on the squishy chunks, thank you very much.

Do you have any weird food texture issues like that? I’m the same way with most fruits, and with jello. *gag*
